Founder's Day - Beach Carnival - Raft Race - Sunday 20 February 2011*
A Beach Carnival in the morning for all sections (Joeys, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers) concluding with a BBQ lunch followed by a raft race for just the Scout section. What a great way to celebrate the birth of the founder of Scouting - Lord Robert Baden Powell! Meet at the Scout Hall at 7:45am, returning by 4pm. Troop Camp - Friday 4 to Sunday 6 March 2011* CANCELLED
Unfortunately the venue for this camp was booked out already so we have had to cancel the camp. Instead we are looking at an alternate day activity. More details soon!

Clean up Australia Day - Sunday 6 March*
Join us in helping clean up Yarran Dheran. Meet in the car park in Ashburton Drive in Mitcham at 9:45am, ready for a 10am start. Activity will conclude at 12pm.
Come in full uniform, but be prepared for any weather - covered shoes, sun hat, sun screen, and/or rain coat as required. Also bring gloves and a drink bottle.
P.S. By completing this activity you will earn credit towards your Citizenship "Good Turn".

Water Safety Night - Thursday 17 March 2011*
The aim of this night is to provide opportunities for Scouts to work towards passing their water safety elective as part of either their Pioneer or Explorer badge.
When: 7pm to 9pm
Where: Nunawading Aqualink - Fraser Place, Forest Hill, Vic (Melway 62E3)
Drop off and pickup from the pool.
Cost: $4 entry to pool
What to wear: full uniform
What to bring: bathers, towel, clothes to be worn in the pool (long pants, top, socks and shoes), drink bottle, and green book
Health Form Required: YES

Dump & Run - Thursday 24 March 2011*
The basis of this activity is that Scouts are blindfolded and taken to an unknown destination. There are 4 designated activity patrols for this activity. Each patrol is taken to a different location and "dumped". The patrol then has to make its way back to Hungry Jacks in Heatherdale Road where the night will finish with supper. Each patrol is to be accompanied by an adult/parent. This person is not to actively direct the Scouts but is there as an emergency backup (and to supervise). Scouts are to be picked up from Hungry Jacks at 9pm. Thanks for all the parents that have offered to help - much appreciated.
When: 7pm to 9pm
Where: starting at the Scout Hall and finishing at Hungry Jacks in Heatherdale Road (Melway 49D9)
Cost: $5 for supper
What to wear:

When: 5:30pm to 8:30pm
Where: pick up and drop off at the Mitcham Railway Station
Cost: $3.40 for a 2 hour zone 1/2 concession Metcard

District Leadership Course - Friday 25 to Sunday 27 March 2011*
For PL's and APL's only. This weekend session will help you to learn and develop new skills, and leadership qualities which can assist you in being a better PL or APL. Oxfam TrailWalker - Friday 1 to Saturday 2 April 2011
The Oxfam TRAILWALKER is a fund raising event for Oxfam where teams of four people aim to complete a 100km course within 48 hours. For 1st Heatherdale this is an opportunity to raise some funds for the Group by providing much needed hot food to the teams of people taking part in the event at one of the check points, including BBQ sausages, hamburgers, and egg and bacon rolls. During the event some participants don't stop, ie, they keep on walking/running through the night; therefore, we aim to provide hot food throughout the night as well. We are catering from 4pm Friday to 9am Saturday morning. Thank you to the families who have already indicated on the Scouts’ Sign In Sheet their availability to help with this year’s Oxfam fundraiser. We require parents from all our sections (Joeys, Cubs and Scouts) to help out and make the night a huge success. Please indicate on the timetable at the hall what times you are available to assist. The times on the timetable are suggestions only and are flexible - you can indicate the times which suit you. Thanks for your continued support.

Air Activities - Sunday 3 April 2011*
An activity for all members of the Group, including airfield safety, identification of parts of a plane, theory of flight and aircraft recognition. The day concludes with all participants being given the opportunity to enjoy a short flight. Cost: $40. Where: Scout Air Activity Centre (SAAC), Moorabbin Aerodrome. All pilots are registered members of the Scout Association and hold a Commercial Pilots Licence. Registration by 17 March. More details ...

PL/APL Camp - Friday 20 to Sunday 22 May*
This camp is for our Troop's Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders only. It will be a chance for the Troop's leading Scouts to enjoy a relaxed time together. More details soon!

Sugarloaf Day Hike - Sunday 19 June*
Take a walk on the wild side. Meet at the Scout Hall at 8am, ready for a day out and about the Sugarloaf Reservoir. Activity will conclude at 5pm. Come in comfortable walking clothes, but be prepared for any weather - covered shoes, sun hat, sun screen, and/or rain coat as required. Also bring lunch and a drink bottle. Sleepover - 6pm Friday 24 June to 9am Saturday 25 June*
Starting at 6pm, please come in uniform as we will be having an investiture ceremony to start the night. Followed by games, music and a video, You will need to bring a change of clothes, pj's, bedding (pillow, sleeping bag and stretcher or lilo), as well as a small plate for supper.
Cost: $5 (includes dinner and breakfast).

McDonalds Fundraiser - Monday 27 June
Come along to McDonalds Nunawading to help 1st Heatherdale Scout Group raise some funds for the group. This has to be one of the easiest fundraisers going around. All you need to do is take the night off cooking and come along to McDonalds for dinner. Invite all your family and friends to do the same (and ask them to mention 1st Heatherdale Scout Group) and the group will receive 10% of all sales between 5:30pm and 7:30pm. How easy is that! Hope to see as many of you as possible on the night.

Action Indoor Sports - Friday 1 July*
This activity will be held at the Action Indoor Sports Centre in Box Hill (9 Clarice Road) from 6pm to 7:30pm. Wear sports clothes - no uniform - scarf only. Bring a drink bottle and/or money to buy a drink. Drop off/pick up from Box Hill. Don't forget to bring an updated Personal Information Record (PIR) or Health Form.
Cost: $10
Location: Action Indoor Sports Centre in Box Hill.

First Aid Training Day - Sunday 17 July*
A one day course meeting the first aid requirements of the current award scheme up to Green Cord level.
Cost: $15 (includes First Aid Manual, badge and VSFAS certificate).
Location: Branch Activity Training Centre, Mount Waverley.

Fantastic Race - Saturday 30 July to Sunday 31 July*
The Fantastic race is a Patrol Activity that will require you to travel around via public transport and foot power, use the grey matter between
your ears, yes that is thinking and I know it hurts, to complete challenges and find information and clues that you will use to complete the
“Password” that will give you access to your next destination and challenges.
Commencing at the Heathmont Railway Station Car Park at 8am on Saturday, (Melway map 50 A12), you will venture out as Patrols travelling primarily by train and foot to a series of destinations at which you will be required to complete a challenge, answer some questions or solve a puzzle in order to complete the password to get your next instructions.
The fantastic Race finishes up at the Scout Hall in H.E. Parker Reserve (Melway map 64 C2) on Sunday with pick up at 3.00pm.
The Cost has been held at $10.00 per scout (the same as previous years) to cover Dinner and Breakfast, Prizes and running costs. You will also need to purchase a Zone 2 MET ticket for each day and each patrol must have a mobile phone which is used to check in with base and for emergency use (DO NOT FORGET YOUR PHONE CHARGER TO RE-CHARGE THE PHONE OVER NIGHT) . You will need to bring Sleeping Gear for Saturday night, pocket money for lunch and snacks or separate food, Dilly Bag and a sense of adventure and fun!!!

Annual Awards and Presentation Night - Monday 8 August
Special meeting to celebrate our achievements as a whole group and elect a new committee - all welcome.

Troop Camp - Saturday 20 to Sunday 21 August*
Our troop camp is to be held from Saturday 20 August to Sunday 21 August at Gilwell Park, Gembrook. We will meet at the Scout Hall at 8am on Saturday and return to the Scout Hall by 2:30pm on Sunday. We will be staying in bunk houses (mattresses provided). Scouts will be allocated to one of two patrols for the weekend and will need to prepare all meals for the weekend in that patrol. This will include creating a menu, buying the necessary food (within a budget) and of course cooking it. The total cost for the weekend is $30 per scout. We will need help with transport - so if you are available to help with transport either to or from camp please let us know.

Whitehorse Showtime - Wednesday 31 August
"Once upon a Showtime" - presented by the Scouts and Guides of Mount Dandenong Region.
Cost: $15.

Cohen Shield 2011 - Year of the Forest - Sunday 11 September*
An annual competitive patrol activity that is held at Clifford Park (more details). We will be meeting at the Scout Hall at 7:30am on Sunday and it will finish at 4:30pm, so will be back at the hall by approx. 5:00pm.

You will need to wear comfortable clothes and runners or walking boots PLUS your Scout scarf.

You will need to bring:
  • hat
  • raincoat
  • small personal first aid kit
  • compass
  • paper, pen/pencil, a small ruler
  • 1 pair of gardening gloves
  • small gardening trowel
  • water bottle
  • LUNCH
  • nibbles
  • medical form (x2)
  • and a day pack to put it all in!
End of Term Activity - Ten Pin Bowling - Thursday 22 September*
For a fun night to end the term come along to the Forest Hill Chase Shopping Centre where we will go ten pin bowling. The AMF Bowling Centre is located on Level 3 of the shopping centre. Drop off at 7pm and pickup at 9pm from Forest Hill.

You will need to wear full uniform. Cost is $13.80 for 2 games.

JOTA / JOTI - Saturday 15 October and Sunday 16 October
Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) and Jamboree On The Internet (JOTI) is an annual international Scouting activity where Scouts and Guides from all over the world come together over a weekend to link up via amateur radio and the Internet to share their Scouting stories.

JOTA
The Scout Radio and Electronics Service Unit, in conjunction with 11th Box Hill Scouts will be putting on a very high tech activity with a full Amateur Radio Station (the hall will look a lot like a porcupine by the time Hayden and Gerard are finished setting up the Antennas!), radio fox hunting, Morse Code battle ship games, semaphore activities and your chance to connect with Scouts from across the country and the world.

VK3SBH (our JOTA call sign) will be broadcasting from the 11th Box Hill Scout Hall over the JOTA/JOTI weekend. All Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers from all groups are encouraged to come along to join in the fun. Those participating will receive a JOTA/JOTI 2010 activities badge, and some Cub and Scouts may even qualify for part or all of some award scheme work. Venturers and Rovers can find out more about how Radio Scouting can be worked into their award schemes or even about how to become a licensed ‘Ham Radio’ operator.

When: 15th and 16th of October, 2011. 9am to 3:30pm.

Discover Scuba Day - Sunday 16 October
*
A great way to experience scuba diving in a controlled environment. This session will be held at the Fawkner Swimming Pool from 9am - 1pm on Sunday 16 October. While this event is only open to Scouts who are 12 years and older, it is also open to siblings and parents of Scouts as well as friends and leaders. There are a number of forms that need to be completed in addition to the normal Personal Information Record & Health Statement. Please read all forms to determine if you are interested in participating and to enable us to gauge the level of interest in this activity.

Unfortunately participants who suffer from Asthma, Type 1 Diabetes or ear problems cannot be accepted unless they bring SPECIFIC written permission for a Try Dive from their registered Medical Practitioner, ie “The Physician Section” (we anticipate that asthma may only apply to asthmatics who have environmental triggers).

If under 18 years of age and a Scouting person you must also fill out the Y5 (Special Activities Permission Form).

Whitehorse Spring Festival - Sunday 23 October
Come and help promote Scouting to the public of Whitehorse. There will be a number of activities in which to participate and assist members of the public with. Our group will be rostered on for part of the day - so please make yourself available. Bring the whole family and have a look at what else is on in Whitehorse. Organised by our District Scout Leaders at the same time as the Family Camp, providing another option for those that might want some hiking preparation for Scout Hike. More details as they come to hand.

Bike Hike - Thursday 3 November*
Come ride the EastLink Trail. Starting at 6pm at Schwerkolt Cottage and finishing at 8pm at a yet to be determined location!

Scout Hike - Friday 4 to Sunday 6 November*
SCOUTHIKE is the name given to the annual hiking event organised for Scouts from all over the state. It is held early in November each year and in 2011 is to be held in the Tallarook State Forest on the weekend of 4th, 5th and 6th November.

It provides Scouts who have not or do not have the opportunity to regularly go hiking and a novel approach as an introduction to hiking and lightweight camping. Further it provides a competitive basis for Scouts and Patrols who have been hiking to compete for the perpetual trophy. Every Patrol receives a SCOUTHIKE Pennant and every scout receives a SCOUTHIKE Badge.

The theme of this year's ScoutHike is "Back to the Future". For a great weekend of fun come to Scout Hike 2011.

Hanover Bike Ride - Sunday 13 November*
This is a fund raising event run by Hanover Welfare Services. Hanover is a leading Melbourne-based agency which provides services to people experiencing homelessness or housing crisis. There are three separate events on the day - all allowing you to ride your bike on Eastlink. It is suggested that we could participate in the 35km ride, known as the Recreational Ride. Note: The Recreational Ride is not timed and is not a race. Participants will have a maximum of 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete the course. Entry Fee: Adult $55 Child $25 (between 10 and 16 years of age) Family (2 adults, 2 children) $110. Start Time: 9:15am – 10:00am (entrants will be allocated a start time).

Gunbower Troop Camp - Friday 25 to Sunday 27 November* - report
Our final camp for the year is to be held on Gunbower Island - 220km north of Melbourne. There will be opportunities to participate in some water based activities and just to have some fun. This camp is just for members of our troop.

Ice Blocking - Thursday 1 December
This is a great night of fun where you get to slide down a hill on an ice block! The only equipment needed is a block of ice, thick clothing and a bike helmet. An old towel (do not bring a good towel as it is likely to get quite stained), a hessian sack or even an old piece of carpet is recommended to sit on. The ice block needs to be big enough so that you can sit on it and thick enough that it does not break in half too easily. 

To make the ice block you need a plastic container. The size of the ice block you require will depend on the size of your Scout. A 4 litre icecream container will make a small one. You can use a 15 litre activity box to make a larger block.  Fill with at least 10 cm of water and freeze for at least 2-3 days. You can add some reinforcing to the ice block by freezing something like an onion bag within the block (do not use metal!). You can also make a handle for your ice block by freezing a piece of rope into the block.

It is likely that you will become wet and dirty, so don't wear your best shorts/pants and runners! Don't forget your helmet.

Final Troop Night for 2011 - Suburban Adventure Racing - Tuesday 6 December*
Our final Scout Troop night for 2011 is to be held this Tuesday 6 December at 1st Koonung Scouts (Koonung Road, Blackburn North - Melway 48A4).

The evening will commence with an activity called Suburban Adventure Racing at 6:40pm, followed by a party and finishing at our usual time of 9pm. 
Note the earlier starting time - this is to allow time for the compulsory briefing to be held before the activity starts.

Suburban Adventure Racing is a joint activity between Scouts and Melbourne Street Orienteering. Participants are given:
  • a map on which a number of locations are marked (usually with circles)
  • a score card - which has your name on it and 20 numbered squares
To take part in the event each competitor must visit a given number of locations on the map and record the fact that they've been there on the score card. When they've visited as many locations as they can (there is a time limit of 1 hour) competitors return to the start - with the one going to the most locations being the winner. This activity is not just for Scouts - it is for all members of the family. Scouts are free and others only cost $2 ea! There will be an event based around our hall early next year - Tuesday 3 January 2012.

The party will take place at the end of the Suburban Adventure Racing. Scouts are asked to bring a small plate of something to eat that they can share. Family members that participate in the Suburban Adventure Racing are invited to join in the party afterwards.

- uniform (shirt and scarf)
